Short of Space? A Church Building is a 3-Legged Stool!

Are you short of space for adults or kids? Is your church building realizing its full potential? A balanced and properly functioning church building is like a 3-legged stool. If a leg of the stool is a different length, not equal to the other two, then the stool isn’t balanced and won’t function. The same is true with a church building.

What are these 3 legs?  Seats, Kids, Parking. A properly functioning church building needs to have its worship auditorium, its children’s areas and its parking spaces in balance.

Here’s an example. If you were to have an auditorium that seats 600, then you are essentially “full” with 540 adults (90%). If your demographic is 30% children to adults (162 kids) and you only have space in classrooms for 120 children, then your auditorium will only draw 400 adults (120÷30%).

It’s the same for parking. In this example, this church building at its peak service with 60 staff/volunteers, could have 720 persons (540+120+60) inside. If this church averaged 2.25 persons per car, then you’ll need 320 parking spaces (320÷2.25). But if you only have control of 275 parking spaces (both on-site and off-site), then you’ll only be able to fit 619 persons (275 X 2.25). Neither your auditorium nor your children’s area will fill and you won’t be all you can be as a church!

The point is this. Each of these 3 foundational components must be in balance for you to fully realize your church building’s potential. If any one of those are out of balance, you’ll need to find ways to expand the shortest leg of the stool. But be careful about investing good money that may not ultimately result in increasing attendance.
